The handheld format shaped the game’s design. Wild World used the Nintendo DS clock and calendar for real-time seasons and events, while its two-screen interface supported menus and play. It was also the first Animal Crossing title with online play through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, allowing players to visit friends’ villages.

A common mix-up is confusing Wild World’s original platform with later rereleases. The game was eventually made available through the Wii U Virtual Console, but its original and canonical platform remains Nintendo DS. Its online features no longer function because Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection ended in 2014.
