The Nike SB Dunk became the first model in Nike Skateboarding’s SB line when Nike Skateboarding launched in 2002.
Nike adapted the Dunk, originally a 1985 basketball shoe, for skateboarding by adding a padded tongue, improved cushioning, and a Zoom Air insole. The SB version also used details intended to improve board feel and comfort during skating.
The model’s appeal expanded through team editions and collaborations, including limited releases that attracted collectors and helped establish modern sneaker-release culture. Its design still referenced the original Dunk’s basketball construction and bold color blocking.
The Nike SB Dunk should not be confused with the regular Nike Dunk. Both descend from the same 1985 silhouette, but the SB version was specifically modified for skateboarding and carried Nike SB branding.
