Which NHL trophy is awarded to the best goaltender?

The story behind the answer

The NHL trophy awarded to the best goaltender is the Vezina Trophy.

The award is presented annually to the goaltender judged to be the best at the position during the regular season. NHL general managers vote to determine the winner, making it different from awards based mainly on statistics or player voting. The trophy is named for Georges Vézina, the celebrated Montreal Canadiens goaltender.

The NHL introduced the Vezina Trophy for the 1926–27 season, after Vézina died from tuberculosis in 1926. For many decades, the award went to the goaltender whose team allowed the fewest goals. Since 1981–82, it has recognized the league’s most outstanding individual goaltender through a general-manager vote.

The Jennings Trophy is the award most closely associated with team defensive statistics: it goes to the goaltender or goaltenders whose team allows the fewest goals. The Norris Trophy honors the best defenseman, while the Calder Trophy honors the best rookie.
