The NHL team originally named the Minnesota North Stars is now the Dallas Stars. The franchise played in Minnesota from 1967 until 1993, when it relocated to Dallas, Texas, and adopted the shorter name Dallas Stars.
The North Stars were one of six expansion teams added to the NHL for the 1967–68 season. They played their home games at the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota, and reached the Stanley Cup Final twice, in 1981 and 1991, but lost both series.
The move followed years of financial and attendance difficulties, along with unsuccessful efforts to secure a suitable new arena in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area. The relocation was formally announced in March 1993. The team kept the franchise's history and records, so the Dallas Stars are the continuation of the Minnesota North Stars franchise.
A common mix-up is the Minnesota Wild, which joined the NHL as a new expansion team in 2000–01. The Wild are not the relocated North Stars, although they brought NHL hockey back to Minnesota after the move.
