Which NHL team was founded as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993?
Answer
Anaheim Ducks
Answer
Anaheim Ducks
The NHL team founded as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993 is the Anaheim Ducks.
The franchise entered the NHL as an expansion team for the 1993–94 season, owned by The Walt Disney Company. Its original name came from the 1992 Disney film The Mighty Ducks, which followed a youth hockey team. The team’s first home was Anaheim Arena, later known as the Pond and then Honda Center.
Disney sold the franchise to Henry and Susan Samueli in 2005. Before the 2006–07 season, the new owners shortened the name to the Anaheim Ducks, dropping “Mighty” and removing “of” from the official identity. The change did not represent a new franchise; it was a rebranding of the same organization.
The name can be confused with the Los Angeles Kings, the Ducks’ nearby Southern California rival, or with the fictional team from the film series. The real Ducks won their first Stanley Cup in 2007, defeating the Ottawa Senators in the Final.
