Which NHL team relocated from Quebec to become the Colorado Avalanche?

The story behind the answer

The Quebec Nordiques relocated from Quebec City to become the Colorado Avalanche.

The Nordiques began as a World Hockey Association franchise in 1972 and joined the NHL in 1979. They played their home games at the Colisée de Québec and became known for stars including Peter Stastny, Michel Goulet, Joe Sakic, and Peter Forsberg.

Financial pressure, Quebec City’s small market, rising player salaries, and the weakening Canadian dollar made the franchise increasingly difficult to sustain. After the Nordiques were eliminated in the first round of the 1995 Stanley Cup playoffs, owner Marcel Aubut accepted an offer from COMSAT Entertainment Group, which also owned the NBA’s Denver Nuggets.

The move was announced in May 1995, and the team debuted as the Colorado Avalanche in the 1995–96 season. The relocation immediately produced a remarkable result: Colorado won the Stanley Cup in its first season in Denver. The Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets, and Hartford Whalers were also relocated franchises, but none became the Avalanche.
