Which NHL team plays at the Bell Centre?

The story behind the answer

The NHL team that plays at the Bell Centre is the Montreal Canadiens.

The Bell Centre opened in 1996 in downtown Montreal, replacing the Canadiens’ longtime home, the Montreal Forum. It is primarily an ice-hockey arena, but it also hosts concerts, family shows, and other major events. The building was originally known as the Molson Centre before being renamed the Bell Centre in 2002.

The Canadiens are one of the NHL’s Original Six franchises, along with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. That history can make the wrong options seem plausible: all three listed teams are famous NHL clubs, but they play in Ottawa, Boston, and Toronto respectively—not Montreal.

The Bell Centre is also strongly associated with the Canadiens’ championship legacy. Montreal has won more Stanley Cups than any other NHL franchise, although its most recent title came in 1993. The arena remains one of the league’s best-known venues and a central part of Montreal’s sports identity.
