Which NHL team moved from Quebec City to Denver in 1995?

The story behind the answer

The NHL team that moved from Quebec City to Denver in 1995 was the Colorado Avalanche.

The franchise began as the Quebec Nordiques, who joined the NHL in 1979 after the league absorbed teams from the World Hockey Association. Financial pressures and difficulty competing in the Quebec market led owner Marcel Aubut to sell the team to a Denver-based ownership group.

The relocation took place after the 1994–95 season, and the club became the Colorado Avalanche. Its first Denver season was 1995–96, when it played at McNichols Sports Arena. The move produced an immediate championship: Colorado won the Stanley Cup in its first season after relocation.

A common mix-up is confusing the Avalanche with the New Jersey Devils, who originated as the Kansas City Scouts and later moved through Denver before settling in New Jersey. The Avalanche are the direct continuation of the Quebec Nordiques franchise.
