Which NHL team holds the record for most consecutive Stanley Cup championships?

The story behind the answer

The Montreal Canadiens hold the NHL record for most consecutive Stanley Cup championships, winning five in a row from 1956 through 1960.

Montreal’s dynasty began with the 1956 championship and continued through the 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960 Finals. The Canadiens defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1956 Final, then beat the Boston Bruins, Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Maple Leafs again in the next four championship series. Their 1960 victory came in a sweep of Toronto.

The streak was part of an even broader period of dominance. Montreal reached 10 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals from 1951 through 1960, winning six championships during that span. The Canadiens also had several other great eras, including four straight championships from 1976 through 1979, but no NHL team has matched the five-title run.

The New York Islanders won four consecutive Cups from 1980 through 1983, while the Edmonton Oilers won four from 1984 through 1988, excluding 1985–86. Those teams are often mentioned alongside Montreal, but neither equaled the Canadiens’ record. The Toronto Maple Leafs also won three straight from 1947 through 1949.
