Which NHL team has the longest active Stanley Cup championship drought?

The story behind the answer

The Toronto Maple Leafs have the longest active Stanley Cup championship drought in the NHL. Toronto last won the Cup in 1967, defeating the Montreal Canadiens four games to two in the final.

That championship was the Maple Leafs' 13th and remains their most recent. The 1967 final was especially significant because it was the last Stanley Cup Final of the Original Six era, just before the NHL expanded from six teams. Toronto's lineup included captain George Armstrong, goaltender Johnny Bower, defenseman Tim Horton and playoff MVP Dave Keon.

The drought is often confused with Toronto's playoff or Stanley Cup Final drought. Those are different measures: the team has reached the playoffs several times since 1967, including deep runs, but has not returned to the Final or won another championship. Other long-standing droughts belong to teams such as Buffalo and Vancouver, but Toronto's began earlier and is the longest among current NHL franchises.
