Which NHL team has gone the longest without winning the Stanley Cup (as of 2024)?

The story behind the answer

As of 2024, the Toronto Maple Leafs had gone the longest among NHL teams without winning the Stanley Cup.

Toronto’s last championship came in 1967, when the Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens four games to two in the Stanley Cup Final. The title was Toronto’s 13th and remains the franchise’s most recent championship. By the end of the 2024 playoffs, the team had gone 57 seasons without another Cup.

The drought began just before a major transformation in the NHL. The 1967 expansion doubled the league from six teams to 12, ending the Original Six era and introducing new clubs that would later win championships. Toronto, however, never returned to the Final during the period covered by this question.

The Blues and Canucks are common mix-ups. St. Louis ended its drought by winning in 2019, while Vancouver has never won the Stanley Cup. A team that has never won is not usually described as having the longest drought since its drought has no starting championship year.
