Which NHL goaltender won the Vezina Trophy five years in a row?

The story behind the answer

Jacques Plante won the Vezina Trophy five consecutive times, from 1956 through 1960.

Plante was the Montreal Canadiens’ goaltender during the club’s late-1950s dynasty. His five straight awards came during a remarkable run that included five consecutive Stanley Cup championships from 1956 through 1960. He later won two more Vezinas, in 1962 and 1969, giving him seven overall.

The Vezina Trophy was first awarded after the 1926–27 season in memory of Canadiens goaltender Georges Vézina. Its original standard was largely tied to team goals-against totals; since 1981–82, general managers have voted for the league’s best goaltender. The William M. Jennings Trophy now recognizes the team goaltenders with the lowest goals-against total.

Plante’s record is sometimes confused with the modern-era record under the voting system. Dominik Hašek has six Vezinas, while Plante remains the overall leader with seven and also owns the record for consecutive wins.
