Which NHL award is given to the league's coach of the year?

The story behind the answer

The Jack Adams Award is given to the NHL coach judged to have contributed the most to his team’s success.

The award was first presented after the 1973–74 season, when Fred Shero became its inaugural recipient. It honors Jack Adams, a Hockey Hall of Fame figure who played, coached and served as general manager, most notably with the Detroit Red Wings. The award is commonly described as the NHL’s Coach of the Year honor.

The winner is chosen in a vote by the National Hockey League Broadcasters’ Association after the regular season. It is not automatically awarded to the coach of the team with the best record or the Stanley Cup champion; voters assess a coach’s overall contribution relative to expectations and circumstances.

Pat Burns holds the career record with three wins. Jacques Demers is the only coach to win in consecutive seasons. The Jack Adams should not be confused with the Ted Lindsay Award, which is presented to the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by fellow players.
