Which NHL award is given annually to the league's top goaltender?

The story behind the answer

The NHL award given annually to the league's top goaltender is the Vezina Trophy.

The trophy was first awarded after the 1926–27 season and honors Georges Vezina, the celebrated Montreal Canadiens goaltender who died of tuberculosis in 1926. George Hainsworth was the inaugural winner.

The award's meaning has changed. From 1946–47 through 1980–81, it generally went to the goaltender or goaltenders on the team that allowed the fewest regular-season goals. Since 1981–82, NHL general managers have voted for the league's most outstanding individual goaltender. The William M. Jennings Trophy now recognizes the lowest team goals-against total.

A common mix-up is confusing the Vezina with the Hart Memorial Trophy, which goes to the NHL's most valuable player and can be won by any position. Jacques Plante holds the Vezina record with seven victories, while the modern award is decided through a ranked vote by the league's 32 general managers.
