Which New Zealand town is home to the Hobbiton movie set?

The story behind the answer

The New Zealand town associated with the Hobbiton movie set is Matamata. The set sits on a working farm in the Waikato region, about 10 kilometres southwest of Matamata, making the town the main gateway and the place most commonly identified with the attraction.

Peter Jackson's production team selected the Alexander Farm during an aerial search in 1998. Construction began in 1999 for The Lord of the Rings, with hobbit holes, gardens, a mill, a double-arch bridge, and the Green Dragon area created to represent Hobbiton in the Shire. Much of the first set was temporary, but it was rebuilt in more durable form for The Hobbit films.

Hobbiton became a permanent tourist attraction after the films. Guided tours began in 2002, and the site now draws visitors to landmarks such as Bag End, the Party Tree, and the Green Dragon Inn. Rotorua and Wellington are also important New Zealand destinations, but neither is the town associated with Hobbiton itself.
