Which New Zealand city is the home of Weta Workshop?

The story behind the answer

Wellington is the New Zealand city that is home to Wētā Workshop.

Wētā Workshop is based in Miramar, a Wellington suburb that became a major centre of New Zealand's film industry. The company is known for practical effects, armour, weapons, costumes, prosthetics, creatures, miniatures and props created for major productions, including Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

The workshop began in 1987 as RT Effects, founded by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger. It later became Wētā Workshop, taking its name from the wētā, a distinctive New Zealand insect. Peter Jackson became closely involved with the company, and its work helped establish Wellington's international reputation as a filmmaking hub.

Visitors can explore the Wētā Workshop Experience and Wētā Cave in Miramar, where displays explain how concepts become finished cinematic objects. Auckland also has a Wētā Workshop attraction, which can cause confusion, but the company's headquarters and original workshop are in Wellington. Wētā Workshop is also separate from Wētā FX, the digital visual-effects company based in the same suburb.
