Abiquiu became Georgia O’Keeffe’s main New Mexico home late in life.
O’Keeffe began visiting New Mexico in 1917 and returned regularly, but she did not move permanently to the state until 1949. She later maintained a home and studio in Abiquiu, a historic village north of Santa Fe. The property, especially its courtyard wall and distinctive door, became an important part of her visual world.
She also spent time at Ghost Ranch, farther north near Abiquiu. Its cliffs, bones, roads, and desert horizons supplied subjects for many paintings. O’Keeffe’s New Mexico work is therefore linked to both the Abiquiu house and the broader Ghost Ranch landscape.
Taos is another New Mexico art center and is frequently associated with regional artists, but it was not O’Keeffe’s principal late-life home. Her Abiquiu house is now preserved and managed by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, with tours offered seasonally.
