Abiquiú became Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home and studio.
O'Keeffe purchased and restored a ruined adobe house in Abiquiú during the 1940s. The building included a distinctive door opening onto a courtyard, a feature she painted repeatedly after finding it visually compelling.
The Abiquiú house gave O'Keeffe a permanent base near the landscapes that had inspired her since her first visits to New Mexico. She also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, farther north, and worked in both locations.
Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because Santa Fe is the region's best-known city and houses the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The home and studio itself is in Abiquiú, about 50 miles north of Santa Fe, and is preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
