Abiquiu was the New Mexico town where Georgia O'Keeffe maintained the adobe house that became her principal home.
O'Keeffe first saw the abandoned adobe compound in Abiquiu in the 1930s and was drawn to its thick walls, courtyard, and distinctive black door. She purchased the property in 1945 after years of trying to obtain it. The house was renovated under her direction and became both a residence and a place of work.
The Abiquiu home provided a different setting from Ghost Ranch, where she also spent substantial time. Its architectural details, including the door and courtyard, became subjects in paintings and photographs. The surrounding landscape offered expansive views of the Chama River valley.
The house is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, managed by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Santa Fe was her later city home, but Abiquiu is the specific town associated with this famous adobe residence.
