Santa Fe houses the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, which opened in 1997.
The museum was established to preserve, study, and present O'Keeffe's art and legacy. It opened in Santa Fe on July 17, 1997, eleven years after the artist's death. The collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and archival materials connected with her career.
Santa Fe was an important center for O'Keeffe during her later life. She moved there permanently in 1984 and lived in the city until 1986, while her Abiquiu home and studio remain preserved separately. The museum's work therefore extends beyond one residence or one period of her career.
A common mix-up is answering Abiquiu because O'Keeffe's adobe house is there. Abiquiu is the location of her home and studio; Santa Fe is the city associated with the museum and its public galleries.
