Georgia O'Keeffe bought property at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico in 1940.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic area near Abiquiu, known for colorful cliffs, open spaces, and distinctive geological formations. O'Keeffe had already been painting New Mexico landscapes for years, and Ghost Ranch became one of her most important sources of subject matter.
She purchased a house at Ghost Ranch in 1940 and used it as a home and studio. The surrounding landscape appears in paintings of cliffs, roads, hills, and wide desert spaces. She later also acquired and restored a house in the village of Abiquiu.
Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu are related but not identical locations. O'Keeffe is associated with both, which can cause confusion in short biographies. Her Ghost Ranch home was more remote, while the Abiquiu house became another major base during her New Mexico years.
