Abiquiú became the New Mexico location associated with Georgia O'Keeffe's later work and home. She purchased and restored a historic adobe house there, making it one of the central places of her mature career.
The Abiquiú house had a distinctive courtyard wall and door, features that O'Keeffe repeatedly observed and painted. The surrounding landscape also provided subjects for her simplified studies of hills, cliffs, bones, and architectural forms. Her studio allowed her to work close to the scenery that shaped her visual language.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place strongly linked with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was a major source of landscape imagery, while Abiquiú became the site of her home and studio. The property is now preserved and interpreted as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
