Georgia O’Keeffe made her home at a restored adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O’Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned repeatedly because of its distinctive landscapes, cliffs, bones, churches, and architecture. She initially lived seasonally at Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú, but later acquired an abandoned adobe house in the village of Abiquiú.
The house became one of her most important personal and artistic environments. Its courtyard, walls, doors, and surrounding landscape appeared in paintings and photographs. She had the building restored so that it could function as a practical year-round home and studio.
Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú are closely related in O’Keeffe’s story but are not interchangeable. Ghost Ranch was a dramatic rural setting where she also lived and worked; Abiquiú was the village where her restored adobe home became a central base.
