Georgia O'Keeffe moved permanently to her Abiquiú home in 1949.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and began spending extended periods there. She rented the Ghost Ranch house in 1936, then bought her Abiquiú property in 1945. After renovations, she moved permanently into the Abiquiú home in 1949.
The house became both a residence and a working environment. O'Keeffe repeatedly painted its courtyard, walls, doors, and surrounding landscape. Its black door is especially recognizable because she used it as a recurring compositional subject.
The move did not end her connection with Ghost Ranch. She continued to draw inspiration from both locations, but Abiquiú became her principal New Mexico base. The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a National Historic Landmark and offers insight into the practical spaces behind her later work.
