Which painting by Georgia O’Keeffe became part of the 2014 record sale of her work?

The story behind the answer

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 was the Georgia O’Keeffe painting sold for a record price in 2014.

The 1932 painting depicts a large white jimson weed flower against a pale background. O’Keeffe enlarged flowers so that their shapes filled the canvas, encouraging viewers to look closely at forms that might otherwise seem ordinary.

At a Sotheby’s auction in New York in November 2014, the painting sold for $44.4 million, including fees. It became the most expensive painting by a female artist sold at auction at that time. The record drew attention both to O’Keeffe’s achievement and to the long-standing underrepresentation of women in art-market records.

The work is sometimes identified only as Jimson Weed, but its full title includes White Flower No. 1.
