Ghost Ranch inspired Georgia O'Keeffe’s paintings of dramatic cliffs and hills.
Ghost Ranch is a landscape near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico, known for colorful rock formations, mesas, and broad views. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the 1930s and later maintained a home there. Its geological forms became among the most recognizable subjects in her work.
She painted cliffs, hills, roads, bones, and distant horizons from the region, often reducing the scenery to bold shapes and carefully balanced color fields. Paintings such as those depicting the cliffs near Ghost Ranch show how she turned a specific place into an almost abstract visual language.
Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu are related but not interchangeable. Abiquiu was the location of her principal adobe home and studio, while Ghost Ranch was a separate rural area farther north that served as an important retreat and source of imagery.
