Which New Hampshire route includes the Kancamagus Highway?
Answer
New Hampshire Route 112
Answer
New Hampshire Route 112
The Kancamagus Highway is included in New Hampshire Route 112.
The Kancamagus section runs for roughly 32 miles between Lincoln and Conway through the White Mountain National Forest. It crosses Kancamagus Pass at about 2,855 feet and is famous for broad mountain views, river valleys, hiking trails, and brilliant autumn foliage.
Although visitors often refer to the entire drive as “the Kanc,” the name applies specifically to the eastern portion of NH 112. The route itself is a 56-mile east–west state highway stretching from Bath to Conway, so NH 112 covers considerably more road than the scenic byway alone.
The highway opened in August 1959 after two previously dead-end road sections were connected. It was paved in 1964 and first plowed through winter during 1966–67. Its name honors Kancamagus, a 17th-century sagamore associated with the Penacook Confederacy.
