Which national park preserves a section of the original Route 66 alignment through Arizona's Petrified Forest?

The story behind the answer

Petrified Forest National Park preserves a section of the original Route 66 alignment through eastern Arizona.

A surviving segment of the 1926-1932 Route 66 roadbed runs through the park, and a historic roadside telephone pole marks the former route. The alignment is associated with the period before later road improvements and interstate construction changed travel across the region.

The park is best known for its fossilized wood, colorful badlands, and Painted Desert landscapes, but its Route 66 history adds a human layer to the natural setting. Visitors sometimes assume the park's modern roads are themselves the original highway; the preserved remnants are separate historic traces.

Petrified Forest National Park is therefore both a geological destination and one of the places where travelers can see physical evidence of early Route 66 engineering.
