Which nation won the most gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics?

The story behind the answer

The Soviet Union won the most gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics, taking 80 titles in Moscow.

The USSR hosted the Games from July 19 to August 3, 1980. Its athletes finished first in both gold medals and total medals, collecting 195 medals overall. The Soviet gold-medal haul set a record for a single Summer Olympics at the time.

The medal table was heavily influenced by a major boycott. The United States and dozens of other countries stayed away in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, leaving many traditionally strong Western teams absent. The Soviet Union still faced competition from East Germany, which finished second in gold medals.

A common mix-up is confusing these Games with the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, where the Soviet Union also led the gold-medal table but won 10 golds. At Moscow, Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin also became the first athlete to win eight medals at one Olympic Games.
