In which city were the 2000 Summer Olympics held?

The story behind the answer

The 2000 Summer Olympics were held in Sydney, Australia. Officially called the Games of the XXVII Olympiad, they ran from 15 September to 1 October 2000 and were widely branded as Sydney 2000.

Sydney was the second Australian city to host the Summer Olympics, after Melbourne in 1956. It was also only the second Summer Olympics held in the Southern Hemisphere. The Games used venues across Sydney, with Stadium Australia serving as the main athletics and ceremony venue.

The event attracted athletes from 199 countries and featured 300 events in 28 sports. Australia finished fourth in the medal table, while the United States led overall. Sydney is sometimes confused with Melbourne because both cities hosted Australian Olympics, but Melbourne hosted the 1956 Games, not the 2000 Games.

A memorable moment came when Australian runner Cathy Freeman lit the Olympic cauldron and later won the women's 400 metres. The Games closed on 1 October with the men's marathon as the final event.
