Uruguay won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, defeating Argentina 4–2 in the final.

The tournament was held in Uruguay from 13 to 30 July 1930. Uruguay was selected as host partly because it was celebrating the centenary of its first constitution and had won the football gold medal at the 1928 Olympic Games.

Thirteen teams competed, making the 1930 event the smallest World Cup by participation. Uruguay reached the final after beating Yugoslavia 6–1 in the semifinal, while Argentina defeated the United States by the same score.

The final was played at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo before a reported crowd of about 68,000. Argentina led 2–1 at halftime, but Uruguay scored three second-half goals to claim the first world title. The competition is sometimes confused with the 1928 Olympic tournament, but FIFA officially recognizes Uruguay as the first World Cup champion.
