Germany won the gold medal in women’s football at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Germany defeated Sweden 2–1 in the gold-medal match at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium on 19 August 2016. The victory gave Germany its first Olympic gold in women’s football, after the team had previously won bronze medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008.
The result was notable because the United States, the reigning champion and winner of the previous three Olympic tournaments, were eliminated by Sweden in the quarter-finals. Sweden then also defeated Brazil in a semi-final decided by a penalty shoot-out before reaching its first Olympic women’s football final.
Germany’s goals came from Dzsenifer Marozsán and an own goal by Linda Sembrant, while Stina Blackstenius scored for Sweden. The women’s Olympic football tournament had first been introduced at Atlanta 1996, making Germany’s 2016 triumph its first title in the event.
