Hungary won the gold medal in men's water polo at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, defeating the United States 14–10 in the final.
The victory extended Hungary's remarkable Olympic tradition in men's water polo. Beijing was the country's third consecutive Olympic title in the event, following gold medals in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004. Hungary also became the first nation to win three successive men's water-polo Olympic titles since the Soviet Union's run from 1972 through 1980.
The final was played on August 24, 2008. Hungary led 6–4 at halftime and maintained its advantage through the second half. The United States, which had not reached the men's final since 1988, earned silver. Serbia defeated Montenegro for bronze, while Hungary's Tamás Kásás, Gergely Kiss, and Péter Biros were among the experienced players who helped deliver the title.
A common mix-up is confusing the 2008 finalists with the 2004 semifinalists or assuming Serbia won because it was a major water-polo power. The Beijing champion was Hungary.
