Argentina won the 1978 FIFA World Cup final in Buenos Aires.
The final was played at the Estadio Monumental on 25 June 1978, with Argentina facing the Netherlands. The score was 1–1 after 90 minutes, as Mario Kempes scored for Argentina and Dick Nanninga equalized for the Dutch side.
Argentina pulled ahead in extra time. Kempes scored again in the 105th minute, and Daniel Bertoni added a third goal in the 115th minute. Argentina therefore won 3–1 and claimed its first World Cup title.
Kempes finished as the tournament's top scorer with six goals and received the Golden Ball. The Netherlands lost its second consecutive World Cup final, having also been defeated by West Germany in 1974. The 1978 tournament was hosted entirely by Argentina.
