Aragorn receives the name Elessar after his coronation in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Following the defeat of Sauron, Aragorn is crowned King Elessar of the Reunited Kingdom. The name means “Elfstone” in Quenya and connects him with the green jewel known as the Elessar. In the story, the jewel is associated with healing and with Aragorn’s relationship to the Elves.
Aragorn has many names and titles, including Strider, Estel, and Telcontar. These names belong to different stages or aspects of his identity, which can make the coronation name easy to miss. “Strider” is his name among the Rangers and in Bree, while “Telcontar” becomes the royal house-name.
Elessar is therefore not simply another nickname for Aragorn. It is the royal name by which he is proclaimed after becoming king, marking the restoration of Númenórean kingship in Gondor and Arnor.
