Aragorn names his reforged sword Andúril in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Andúril means “Flame of the West” in Quenya. The sword is reforged from the shards of Narsil, the blade that Isildur used to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand at the end of the Second Age. Aragorn receives the reforged weapon before the Fellowship begins its journey from Rivendell.
Narsil had been broken during the battle in which Elendil was killed. Its shards remained an important heirloom of the kings of Gondor and Arnor. By carrying Andúril, Aragorn publicly connects himself with the royal line of Númenor and the history of the Dúnedain.
The name is sometimes confused with the sword’s earlier identity, Narsil. They are not two unrelated weapons: Andúril is the reforged form of Narsil.
