Mulberry launched the Alexa handbag in 2010 and named it after British model and television presenter Alexa Chung.
The design drew inspiration from a vintage Mulberry men’s satchel that Chung was photographed carrying. It combines a satchel-like shape with a top handle, shoulder strap, buckled details, and the brand’s signature postman’s-lock hardware. The result helped connect Mulberry’s heritage styling with contemporary fashion culture.
The Alexa is sometimes confused with the Bayswater, another major Mulberry design. The Bayswater has a more traditional structured handbag profile, while the Alexa is associated with the relaxed satchel form and multiple carrying options.
The bag became especially prominent during the early-2010s “It bag” era, when celebrity associations strongly influenced handbag demand.
