Chanel’s Boy Chanel is the handbag introduced by Karl Lagerfeld in 2011 and named after Coco Chanel’s nickname for Arthur Capel.
Arthur “Boy” Capel was an English polo player and an important early figure in Gabrielle Chanel’s life. He financially supported her first millinery business and remained a significant personal influence. The Boy Chanel design used that history as its naming inspiration while presenting a more youthful, androgynous alternative to the house’s classic quilted flap bags.
Its visual language includes a rectangular, boxier body, a chunky chain, and a clasp that evokes masculine sporting and hunting equipment. Those details distinguish it from the more rounded proportions and interlocking-CC turn lock commonly associated with the Classic Flap.
The Boy Chanel should not be confused with Chanel’s Gabrielle handbag, which was introduced later and named directly for the founder. The Boy line has appeared in multiple sizes, leathers, colors, and seasonal treatments.
