Chanel’s Classic Flap is the handbag identified by a large CC turn-lock clasp and introduced in 1983.
Karl Lagerfeld adapted Chanel’s earlier 2.55 design into the version now widely called the Classic Flap. The update replaced the original rectangular Mademoiselle lock with Chanel’s interlocking CC closure and helped make the bag a defining symbol of the house.
The design generally combines quilted leather, a flap top, and a chain strap threaded with leather. It has been produced in several sizes and materials, which means the exact dimensions and interior layout differ between editions.
The Classic Flap is often confused with the 2.55 because both descend from Chanel’s flap-bag tradition. The clasp is the clearest distinction: the Classic Flap uses the interlocking CC logo, while the classic 2.55 is associated with the rectangular Mademoiselle lock.
