Which movement did Mahatma Gandhi lead in 1942 demanding an end to British rule in India?
Answer
Quit India Movement
Answer
Quit India Movement
Mahatma Gandhi led the Quit India Movement in 1942, demanding an end to British rule in India.
The All-India Congress Committee adopted the Quit India resolution in Bombay on 8 August 1942, during the Second World War. Gandhi called for mass resistance and used the slogan “Do or Die.” The movement sought immediate British withdrawal rather than a gradual constitutional settlement.
British authorities arrested Gandhi and other Congress leaders almost immediately. With the leadership imprisoned, protests, strikes, sabotage, and underground organizing spread across parts of India. The colonial government responded with widespread arrests and repression.
Quit India was the last major nationwide movement led by Gandhi against British rule. It did not produce independence immediately, but the wartime campaign demonstrated the depth of Indian opposition and helped make continued colonial rule increasingly difficult after the war.
