Which mountains did the Genesis story name as the Ark’s resting place?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” rather than naming one individual summit. Ararat was an ancient geographical region associated with Urartu, generally located around parts of modern eastern Turkey, Armenia, and neighboring areas.

The biblical wording is important because it does not say that the Ark rested specifically on the summit of Mount Ararat. Later traditions and popular culture often identify Mount Ararat as the exact landing site, and many expeditions have searched the region, but no discovery has been scientifically verified as Noah’s Ark.

The text says the Ark rested after the waters receded, while the surrounding mountains gradually became visible. Thus “Mount Ararat” is a common shorthand, but “the mountains of Ararat” is the more precise answer to what Genesis actually says.
