Which mountain range does Genesis name as the Ark’s resting place?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural expression “mountains of Ararat,” identifying a region rather than naming one specific peak. Ararat was associated with the ancient kingdom or land of Urartu, located around parts of the Armenian Highlands and eastern Anatolia.

The biblical wording is often shortened in popular culture to “Mount Ararat.” That famous mountain in eastern Turkey became a major focus of later searches and traditions, but Genesis itself does not say that the Ark rested on the summit of that single mountain.

The distinction matters because the text gives a regional description. Numerous expeditions and alleged discoveries have been reported over the centuries, yet no archaeological evidence has established the Ark’s location or survival as a historical vessel.
