Which mountain is the home of Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

The mountain that is Smaug’s home in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is the Lonely Mountain.

The Lonely Mountain, also called Erebor, is a prominent peak in the north of Middle-earth. It was once the wealthy kingdom of the Dwarves under King Thrór, whose people mined gold and discovered the precious Arkenstone.

Smaug attacked Erebor and drove out the Dwarves, taking their treasure as his hoard. In The Hobbit, Thorin Oakenshield leads an expedition to reclaim the kingdom, with Bilbo serving as the group’s burglar.

The Lonely Mountain should not be confused with Mount Doom. Mount Doom is the volcanic peak in Mordor where the One Ring was forged and ultimately destroyed. Erebor is instead the setting for the dragon’s treasure and the Battle of the Five Armies.
