Which Mortal Kombat game was the first to include a playable 3D arena?

The story behind the answer

Mortal Kombat 4 was the first main Mortal Kombat game to use fully 3D character models and arenas.

Released in arcades in 1997, Mortal Kombat 4 moved the series away from the digitized actor imagery used by the first three arcade games. Fighters and environments were rendered in three dimensions, while the game retained familiar elements such as special moves, Fatalities, and a tournament-focused story.

The shift also introduced weapons that characters could draw during combat, adding another tactical layer to matches. Mortal Kombat 4 was later ported to several home systems, including the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and PC.

It is important to distinguish Mortal Kombat 4 from later games such as Deadly Alliance and Deception. Those titles expanded the series’ 3D mechanics, but Mortal Kombat 4 made the initial transition from the earlier two-dimensional visual style.
