Which Mortal Kombat game introduced the Special Forces soldier Kurtis Stryker?

The story behind the answer

Mortal Kombat 3 introduced the Special Forces soldier Kurtis Stryker.

Stryker is a modern law-enforcement character who joins the defenders of Earthrealm during Shao Kahn’s invasion. Unlike many fighters in the series, he does not rely on magical powers, a royal lineage, or an ancient clan. His weapons include a handgun, grenades, and a nightstick, giving him a deliberately contemporary style.

Mortal Kombat 3 was released in arcades in 1995. Its roster and mechanics introduced several major additions, including the Run button and chain combos. Stryker’s presence helped broaden the series’ range of character archetypes, placing an ordinary human officer alongside supernatural ninjas, gods, and sorcerers.

The character was initially received unevenly by some fans because his design contrasted sharply with the franchise’s fantasy imagery. Later games and storylines gave him a clearer role among Earthrealm’s Special Forces. Stryker should not be confused with Sonya Blade or Jax Briggs, who also serve as Earthrealm military allies but debuted earlier.
