Which Mortal Kombat game introduced the Kreate-A-Fatality system?

The story behind the answer

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon introduced the Kreate-A-Fatality system.

Armageddon, released in 2006, replaced the traditional fixed finishing sequences with Kreate-A-Fatality. After winning a match, the player could string together finishing moves within a time limit, building a customized sequence instead of selecting one unchanging fatality for the character.

The system reflected Armageddon’s broader goal of giving players more customization. The game also featured Create-A-Fighter, allowing users to design an original combatant, and a story mode centered on Taven’s journey through a world threatened by the final battle between the realms.

Kreate-A-Fatality is distinct from the standard character-specific fatalities used in most other entries. Mortal Kombat: Deception, the preceding main fighting game, retained conventional fatalities. Later games returned to more traditional finishing moves, although they added new categories such as stage fatalities, animalities, and brutalities at different points in the series.
