Which Mortal Kombat character was the series’ first female playable fighter?

The story behind the answer

Sonya Blade was Mortal Kombat’s first female playable fighter.

She debuted in the original Mortal Kombat arcade game in 1992. Sonya is a United States Special Forces officer and was created as one of the game’s seven original playable characters.

Sonya’s storyline centers on her pursuit of the criminal Kano and his organization, the Black Dragon. Her military background distinguishes her from many of the series’ supernatural fighters.

Kitana and Jade first appeared in Mortal Kombat II, while Skarlet debuted much later. Sonya is also a recurring central character in the games, animated projects, and live-action films.
