Mac Tonight was the moon-themed character used to promote McDonald’s in late-1980s advertising.
The character appeared as a person with a crescent-moon head, dark sunglasses, and formal evening clothing. Commercials paired the image with a jazz-influenced version of “Mack the Knife,” positioning McDonald’s as an evening destination.
Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 and became especially associated with McDonald’s dinner advertising. The campaign’s visual style differed from the earlier McDonaldland characters, using a surreal mascot and a lounge-music presentation rather than a children’s fantasy setting.
Mac Tonight is often confused with Ronald McDonald because both were prominent McDonald’s advertising figures. Ronald was the long-running clown spokesman; Mac Tonight was a separate campaign character built around night-time dining and the moon image.
