Meramec Caverns was the Missouri attraction known for extensive Route 66 advertising on barns and other roadside surfaces.
The cave system near Stanton became especially famous for its painted advertisements. Drivers could encounter Meramec Caverns messages on barns, roofs, and other large surfaces along the highway, creating a long-distance promotional campaign before modern digital advertising.
The attraction’s underground chambers were already a draw, but the advertising made its name familiar to motorists who had never visited. This combination of natural scenery and aggressive roadside promotion became a defining feature of classic Route 66 travel.
Meramec Caverns is sometimes confused with other Missouri cave attractions, including Fantastic Caverns near Springfield. Both are major tourist caves, but Meramec Caverns is the one particularly associated with the famous Route 66 barn-painting campaign. The cave remains open as a commercial attraction.
