Which Mexican state is home to the town of Arandas, a major tequila-producing center?

The story behind the answer

Jalisco is the Mexican state that contains Arandas, a major tequila-producing center.

Arandas is a municipality and city in the Los Altos de Jalisco region of western Mexico. The area is strongly associated with blue agave cultivation and tequila production, and several important tequila companies operate in or around the municipality.

Los Altos is one of the principal agave-growing areas within tequila’s protected denomination of origin. Its highland landscape, red soils, and agricultural traditions have helped make eastern Jalisco an important part of the tequila industry alongside the town of Tequila and the central valleys.

Arandas should not be confused with the state of Oaxaca, which is particularly famous for mezcal. Both spirits are made from agave plants, but tequila has its own protected production rules and is primarily associated with Jalisco and the other officially designated Mexican states.
